Sarabha Nagar Market Ludhiana

Ludhiana Markets

However the upcoming Sarabha Nagar Market does not offer much to the shoppers. People come here just to while away their time. With some good restaurants and food joints it serves as a good place to eat out. Moreover, it is a favourite haunt for the college and university youngsters. It is precisely a dating market. And the youngsters have coined their own term for a round to the market. They call it gheri. And hundreds of youngsters would love to make a gheri of the market at least once in a day. .........................

Ghumar Mandi Ludhiana

Ludhiana Shopping Places

The busy commercial hub of Ghumar Mandi in the city was once again plagued with a nerve-testing traffic jam this afternoon that lasted for about two hours, bringing once again to the fore the menace of encroachments in the area.

Ever since Ghumar Mandi, once a desolate place, came to be reckoned as new commercial centre for the Civil Lines area, it has witnessed remarkable changes. Old haveli-type buildings have made way for palatial shopping plazas and showrooms. Business activity has increased so much that even more modern buildings are still being razed to erect multi-storyed shopping complexes.

Because of the festival season, all shops have made extra extensions and the number of rehris selling household items are also increasing with the passing of each day. It seems the residents are in for more traffic jams in the days to come.

Ludhiana Master Plan

Ludhiana Master Plan:

Master Plan of Ludhiana was initially prepared in the year 1971 was published in the govt. gazette. A number of residential urban development schemes and industrial focal points were planned as per the proposals of this master plan, keeping the ground conditions in view; this master plan was revised in the year 1985. Again the revision was made in the year 1992. But, unfortunately these revised master plans couldn't be notified in the official gazette, as there was no Act available under which these master plans could become the statutory documents. The implementation of proposals of these master plans couldn't be enforced as a result of which unplanned growth and haphazard growth continued to take place; ultimately resulted in chaos everywhere in the city deteriorating living as well as working conditions..............................

Dr. B.L Kapoor Memorial Hospital, Ludhiana

It began with a visionary, Dr Beshasher Lal Kapur, a young medical enthusiast from The Medical School of Germany who arrived in Lahore in 1930. He was shocked that India followed the traditional “daai” system for the deliveries and in the process many mothers ran the risk of infections and stood at the edge of losing their babies with related medical problems. This scenario provoked him to think and in the process conceived a vision... of creating an institution that could understand and take care of all the medical needs of a woman before, during and after her pregnancy... to give the joy of motherhood in a healthy and safe way.

Dr Kapur realized this vision by setting up the first maternity hospital in Lahore under the aegis of Lahore Hospital Society. Just when all the services he offered in the hospital began and were being recognized and appreciated by the people of Lahore, India went through the trauma of partition and Dr Kapur shifted to Ludhiana. But the transition of place was no a deterrent to this visionary and he went ahead setting up the Hospital n Ludhiana and called it “The Ludhiana Maternity Hospital.” It is now situated at Old Sabzi Chowk Ludhiana.

Today the same CMC & Hospital is a premier institution, which consists of Medical College, Dental College & a College of Nursing. While CMC continues to be involved in community outreach, it has grown leaps & bounds in highly developed specialized services for patients.........................................

Ludhiana Cricket

This Ludhiana city has produced many cricketers like Yash Pal Sharma, Chaman Lal, Bharti Vij, Satish Mangal, Girdhari Lal Joshi, Dharam Raj (senior and junior), Vinod Sharma, Rakesh Mehra, Dharmveer, Shyam Lal and many others. But Ludhiana is lacking proper infrastructure for the game, as there is no cricket stadium in the town.

All the players who represent the district & the other enrolled by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) have to practice at the Arya College ground because there is no cricket stadium in this industrial town. The other cites like Jalandhar, Patiala, Mohali and Amritsar are having a cricket stadium. Ludhiana is the largest, most populated city of the state with the maximum number of cricket players and sports lovers. But the government appears to be ignorant about the promotion of the game in the city........................................

Sutlej Club Ludhiana

Satluj Club Ludhiana is one of the oldest & prestigious clubs in the north, which was Ludhiana established by the British. The club has maintained its elite character and is very selective in granting membership. Probably that explains the reason why the membership has been restricted at less than 3000 in a city of 40 lakh people. The facilities, luxuries, entertainment and enjoyment this family club provides can't be availed by a common man. The members of the club are mostly the elite of the city representing different sections of society, be they businessmen, doctors or professionals from different trades. This makes the annual general election to the club quite a keenly contested one with the rival groups doing their level best to claim maximum number of votes.

Sutlej Club Ludhiana, stands testimony to the city and its growth & changing ethos for near three decades now. As the Ludhiana city undergoes change with each passing day, so does the Sutlej Club. The five-acre of building of the club near Rakh Bagh is one place where one can let one’s hair down and chill whether at a Star night or just go there for recreation. It is said in Ludhiana that you haven’t arrived on the social scene as long as you are not a member of Sutlej Club. Almost all the ace industrialists of Ludhiana are the part of Sutlej milieu.

Ludhiana Seasons

The foremost notion of Ludhiana one gets is that of a city, effervescent with opulence. The land of Ludhiana is a land of exhilarating culture, numerous images of credible emerald green fields & jovial people whose healthy pastoral ways of friendship & bonhomie are very much a part of their tradition.

There are three main seasons i.e. summer, monsoon & winter. Summer remains in the Ludhiana from Mid April to Mid July & the heat is excruciating at that time. Monsoon touches this city in the month of July & remains in action till September. Most of the rainfall in the Punjab state occurs during this season only. Winter comes in October & remains till March and extreme cold can be experienced during this time...........................

Ludhiana Temperature

There is a meteorological observatory in the district at Ludhiana and the records of this station may be taken as representative of the meteorological conditions in the district in general. Temperatures increase rapidly after February. June is generally the hottest month with the mean daily maximum temperature at 40.6oC (105.1oF) and the mean daily minimum at 27.2oC (81.0oF). Hot scorching dust-laden winds blow during the summer season and on individual days the day temperature may reach above 45oC (1130oF). Afternoon thundershowers and occasional dust storms bring welcome relief from the heat though only temporarily. With the onset of the monsoon in the district early in July, there is appreciable drop in the day temperatures.

But the night temperature in the monsoon season is nearly as high as in the latter part of summer. On account of the increased moisture in the monsoon air, the weather is quite sultry and uncomfortable even in the monsoon season in between the rains. After about mid-September when the monsoon withdraws, the night temperatures decrease rapidly.

Ludhiana Climate

Ludhiana experiences a very extreme type of climate, which is very hot in the summer and very cold during the winter. Ludhiana Climate is characterized by dryness except a brief spell of monsoon season in a very hot summer & a bracing winter. May, June & Mid-July are generally considered to be the hottest months. Hot and scorching dust laden winds blow during summer season and on individual days the day temperature by to night temperature. The monsoon washes off the city of Ludhiana during the months of July to the first phase of September. The period of mid September to about the middle of November may be termed as post monsoon or transitional period.

The winter season starts from middle of November to the early part of March, when it becomes very cold during the night. December & January are the coldest month. If you can stand neither extreme heat nor cold, the best time to visit Ludhiana is from February to mid April. Starting from February to the mid of April, the weather in Ludhiana remains quite pleasant and enjoyable. This is the best time of the year for the people to visit Ludhiana who fails to tolerate any sort of extremities of climatic conditions.

Ludhiana Communications

With city limits expanding time and again, communication and travel ought to have been difficult, but Ludhiana springs a surprise. Easy to travel and even get connected to near and dear ones back home, this is a perfect city to live in! Especially when you are away from home.

Telephones/Faxes : Walking down any road, lane or streets you'll find so many boards with either PCO/STD/ISD or Xerox which you should keep a lookout for. One can find fax facilities mostly with the telephone booths, especially the ones in shopping complexes or in buildings.

Telephone booths are something you would get everywhere. For the large number of students, many telephone booths have started giving facilities to receive calls at nominal charges from parents, friends or relatives. Carry loose change always for the coin operated telephones, as many a time it's something difficult to find. Be careful to read the instructions as many don't accept old coins and some are accepted either before or after dialing the number.

Only a couple of Telephone booths are open 24 hours and most of the booths shut by 11:30 p.m. or later depending on the customers. In the outskirts, telephones are less. Instead of driving on, stop at the first booth you see. Always remember to ask the counter person if he has change for your call before you dial......................

Ludhiana Etiquettes

Ludhiana is a city of contrasts. Affording the luxuries and facilities of a big city, it has the comforts of a small town. While the people remain exceedingly friendly and even more so, when you try a smattering of Punjabi, this is a city of cross cultures. To be here, you need to be aware of a few things:

Etiquette : Ludhianvis are a friendly lot. If you were over to their place for a meal, they would appreciate flowers or any gift, as most Ludhianivis are very friendly. Dinner times are usually between 8.30 and 10.00, lunch times are at 1.00 p.m in the afternoon

Tipping : Usually a tip of 10 to 15% is considered customary, however if you are student, then you can get away with it, as `students pay no tips.’ Also tipping a rickshaw driver or even a bus conductor is not required, but porters or coolies, postmen, registered telegram officials and your telephone workmen expect a tip. Also if you are staying at somebody’s place, it is a part of the tradition to tip the servants. If you are just moving to Ludhiana, then your servants and gardeners expect a tip during the festive seasons of Diwali or Baisakhi, which could amount to half their salary.

Dress Code : While in Ludhiana anything goes, if you are a student - sleeveless shirts to even minis skirts and shorts, jeans form an ideal and an unsaid dress code.Though if you want to blend in the crowd, a staid salwar kameez or a sari is a must for business dealings, if you are not sure of what reception you are likely to receive. While at discs and pubs, you can set your own rules. While some follow the adage, `less is more’, others play it by the comfort rules. Just make sure, you get the dressin’ down right, otherwise you might feel out of place!

Ludhiana Facts

Fondly called as the Manchester of India and the Cultural-cum-Industrial capital of Punjab, Ludhiana as a city has grown manifolds over the past few decades.

Language : The regional language out here is Punjabi. Unlike many other Indian regional languages, Punjabi is easy to understand, posing not too many problems to the tourist. Much can be attributed to the similarity it holds with the national language Hindi.

Traffic : The traffic out here does get congested and it is best to travel either via two-wheelers or auto rickshaws in the interiors. The amount of two-wheelers and four wheelers here are probably the highest in the country.

Safety : As is with the most of the cities, the intra-city areas are very safe even during the night. Venturing alone or into unknown areas on the outskirts is not advisable. Though Ludhiana does not report of very serious crime rates, petty thefts etc. are to be watched out for. Do not stop to give lifts or to ask directions during night times in isolated areas.

Currency : The Indian Rupee is the used currency. Many new currency exchange points and ATM centers have come up all over the city over the last few years making money very easily accessible for visitors. Always carry loose change in coins for urgent calls, parking etc. One should beware of the Rs 500 notes, check them before using.............................

Ludhiana Cinemas

Today the Cinema business in ludhiana has undergone a series of ups and downs. Once a picture hall came up, no one would fail to notice it. Even roads were popularly christened after them. ‘Raikhy’ and ‘Naulakha’ led to the Cinema Road in the thirties, while Deepak gave rise to Deepak Cinema Road in the early fifties. A few busy crossings are known by the theatres in the surrounding area, like Kailash Chowk & Aarti Chowk. 1931 is a landmark. Ludhiana, a medium-sized town in the thirties, provided its citizens with ‘Raikhy’, ‘Naulakha’ and ‘Minerva’.

In the fifties, population grew and such sites were sought as were close to the railway station and the bus-stand. ‘Society’ appeared, followed by ‘Lakshmi’, a year later. Calcutta-connected and Jalandhar-based Kailash Pictures was the brainchild of Kailash Gupta. With Mr Thapar of Ludhiana in distribution business they founded the ‘Kailash Cinema’. Meena Bazaar Ludhiana

The present day Meena Bazaar offers many things, from sweet ‘batashas’ for children to shrouds for the old, but the beautiful faces and the tinkling of the anklets have vanished. The Meena bazaar had lost its charm with the Partition. It is said that Begum Jaan and her daughter Phoolan used to sing so melodiously that even birds were mesmerised. As per oldest living inhabitant of the bazaar, there was a big ‘haveli’ of Rani — the queen of ‘scarlet ladies’. When she travelled on an elephant, her glory was to be seen to be believed. Now that ‘haveli’ is in a dilapidated condition.

The Meena bazaar now has shops of confectioners and general merchants, besides some cardboard factories. A stench has replaced the sweet smell of roses and, instead of pretty damsels in balconies, a cluttered mesh of power and telephone cables is seen all over. Rickshaws, carts, stray animals and shoppers trudge over the potholed roads here today, raising dust, as if to bury the glorious past of Meena Bazaar.........................................

Chaura Bazaar Ludhiana

However, Chaura Bazaar still remains the center of attraction for all. The reason being is obvious. If Ludhiana is the commercial capital of Punjab, Chaura Bazaar is the commercial capital of Ludhiana with daily business transactions running in hundreds of crores. Whether it is the local people or the visitors from outside, Chaura Bazaar remains everybody’s preference. Even the foreigners, who had come here to participate in seminars or other events, had learnt about it and they would ask for its location. There is a general impression that what is sold for Rs 100 at the Mall is available for Rs 50 in Chaura Bazaar.

Chaura Bazaar, believed to be over 100 years old, no longer stands by its definition. With encroachments on both the sides having narrowed it down to pass through it difficult during the daytime. And still people throng it. And on Sundays, when the shops are closed, there is a heavy rush for Sunday Bazaar here. It also remains the favourite haunt of the people from the countryside. There are some very old & famous business outlets like Lyal Book Depot, Khushi Ram’s Sweet Shop.......................................

Ludhiana Bazaars

Ludhiana Bazaars

There is exclusiveness to Ludhiana bazaar. They are modern and old at the same time. This is because Ludhiana is among those cities in the country, which has grown at a phenomenal pace in the post-Partition era. With a population of less than one lakh at the time of Partition, the city has already crossed 30 lakhs.

The number of bazaars in Ludhiana seems to have grown in appropriate proportion to its population. There is a long list of markets starting from the old and ancient Purana Bazaar to the modern Sarabha Nagar market and the Mall. Count anything and there would be a bazaar in its name. Ludhiana Academic Scene

The academia of the city is worth taking notice of. It is difficult to count the names of the colleges here on the fingers of both hands. Another round is necessitated. Like the ancient Greek city of Athens, Ludhiana cannot boast of a Plato or an Aristotle. Still the academies here are no less renowned than the proverbial Greek academy. The subjects taught in the colleges are mind-boggling as the bug of IT (information technology) has bitten almost all institutions. Now there is no end as every end has a new beginning.

At the postgraduate level, the colleges in the city are vying with one another in a mood of healthy competition. Nearly two & a half decades ago the local Government College was the only co-educational institution in the city where English was taught at the postgraduate level. On their part, Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women (Gujjarkhan campus) and SDP College for Girls (Daresi Ground) were meeting the needs of only the girls for gaining postgraduate degrees in English literature.

Ludhiana History

Ludhiana gets its name from the Lodhi Dynasty, which is believed to have founded the city in the year 1480. During the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Ludhiana became an important British cantonment. Initially, in 1805, Maharaja Ranjit Singh had occupied Ludhiana. However, in 1809, the British decided to curb his advance eastwards and sent troops to confront him. Ranjit Singh was forced to sign the treaty of 'perpetual friendship' with the British, which confined his activities to the right bank of the Sutlej. British troops were permanently stationed in Ludhiana and the Cis-Sutlej states came under British protection.

Many leaders of the Indian freedom movement came from Ludhiana. Prominent among them were Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Kartar Singh Saraba, Baba Santa Singh and Maulana Habibur Rehman. Ludhiana has contributed five chief ministers, namely Bhim Sen Snahan, Justice Gurnam Singh, Gian Singh Rarewala, Lachaman Singh Gill and Beant Singh.

Ludhiana Introduction

Ludhiana or Lodiana, is called after the Lodis, which dynasty ruled at Delhi from A.D. 1451 to1526. The Two Lodi Chief, Yusaf khan and Nihang Khan, deputed by Sikandar Lodi (A.D.1489-1517) to restore order in the region, fixed head-quarters on the present location of Ludhiana city, which was at the time on more than a village called Mir Hota. Legend has it that Yusaf crossed the Satluj to check the Khokhars, who were then plundering the Jalandhar Doab, and settled at Sultanpur; Nihang Khan remained at Mir Hota as the Emperor’s lieutenant and called the place Ludhiana.

No one is in a mood to listen while the city is crying hoarse. Not that there is so much rush, it is because the mind of its inhabitants is elsewhere. There is no space to stretch one’s limbs and the time has been reduced to a roundabout at the clock tower. A grand race is taking place with no destination in sight. This marathon race is an end in itself. The promised joyride is in fact turning to be a pain in the neck. Still the show must go on; else the house of cards will come tumbling down. Amidst all this flurry of activities, there are literary discussions, cultural seminars, photograph and painting exhibitions, song and dance concerts, flower and baby shows, games and sports, stag parties and girlie outpourings, convocations and annual functions, declamations and debates, besides the get-togethers of senior citizens.
